Downloading plugins and following tutorials will only take you so far - what if you need something that simply hasn't been done before? You would have to develop it yourself, you would have to learn jQuery from the begining and start with the basics.

Easiest way is to learn by doing, find functionality that you want, and figure out by using logic and research how to implement.

You can try to use Glimmer: A jQuery Interactive Design Tool and download Glimmer & its example files for free. It generates jQuery scripts for common interactive scenarios. In this point you can identify the event controls. Other good resources could be: www.learningjquery.com
I would say, the best way to learn jQuery is by just using it!
